Most first pajama brands over-design and under-budget. The collection launches with eight styles, three fabrics, custom packaging and a tight budget — and the factory's response is a polite "MOQ 2,000 per style." Here is the launch plan that actually fits a low MOQ pajama manufacturer programme.
Step 1: Decide what your brand is for
Before contacting a factory, write one sentence: This brand is for [customer] who wants [feeling] when [occasion]. Every product decision that follows should either pass or fail that sentence.
Examples that work:
- For hot sleepers who want a soft, cool pajama they can wear on summer nights.
- For new parents who want matching family pajamas for holiday photos.
- For brides who want silk pajamas for the wedding morning.
If you cannot write that sentence, you are not ready to sample.
Step 2: Pick one fabric, not three
Pick one fabric for the first collection. For most first pajama brands this is a 160 to 200 gsm combed cotton. It is forgiving, it photographs well, and the cotton pajama set OEM manufacturer you work with will already have it running.
Add a second fabric only if your brand story requires it. A "cooling sleepwear" brand needs a bamboo lyocell second fabric. A "luxury gifting" brand needs silk. Everyone else can launch in cotton and add fabric later.

Step 3: Pick one fit, two sizes
The first collection should have one fit (e.g. relaxed long-sleeve long-pant set, or short-sleeve short-pant set) and two sizes: S/M and L/XL. Skip XS and XXL on launch. Skip tall and petite. Skip a men's variant and a women's variant if you can — run one unisex fit and grade it.
This is the single biggest place first brands overspend: too many sizes, too many fits, too many patterns.
Step 4: Budget honestly for samples
For a low MOQ pajama manufacturer programme the realistic sample cost is:
- Prototype sample: USD 80–200 per style, refundable against the first bulk order.
- Size set sample: USD 200–400 per style (covers two sizes, two colours).
- Pre-production sample: USD 100–200 per style, the one you shoot your launch photography with.
Plan USD 1,500 to USD 3,000 for samples, photography, and a trip to the factory (or a virtual factory tour if travel isn't possible). Anything less and you will be guessing at fit and fabric.
Step 5: Negotiate the first bulk order
The MOQ for a first pajama bulk order at a women's sleepwear OEM factory low MOQ programme is typically 50 to 100 pieces per style, with 100 to 200 pieces per colour. With two sizes, two colours, one style, that is roughly 800 to 1,600 pieces for the first bulk.
Make sure the contract specifies:
- The exact fabric composition, GSM and width.
- Shrinkage tolerance (3% is normal, 5% is too much).
- Colour fastness rating (4–5 for sleepwear).
- Inspection standard (AQL 2.5 is normal for a first order).
Step 6: Don't skip packaging, but keep it small
Custom packaging matters for the unboxing photo, but it does not need a fully custom box on day one. A simple branded hang tag, a polybag with a sticker, and a thank-you card inside a standard mailer will photograph beautifully and cost almost nothing per piece. Save the custom box for the second collection.
Step 7: Price for margin, not for the algorithm
The standard markup for a private-label pajama brand is 3.5× to 5× landed cost, depending on channel and brand positioning. A cotton pajama set that lands at USD 12 wholesale should retail at USD 49 to USD 65. If your landed cost is USD 8 and your retail is USD 39, you have no marketing budget — and the brand will not survive a slow month.
You can read the broader OEM vs ODM guide for how to keep setup costs down across the first two collections.
Final word
A low MOQ pajama brand launch is a proof, not a business. The job of the first collection is to learn whether the customer you wrote about in step 1 actually exists. Keep the collection small, keep the fabric one, keep the fit one — and let the second collection earn its complexity.
